The JMI is a joint project between Twin and twelve smallholder coffee co-operatives in Africa. The JMI is a natural extension of Twin’s work with coffee producer organisations in Africa, which is focussed on capturing value for smallholders by:
- Improving the quality of their product in order to access speciality markets;
- Participating in certification schemes to secure the right credentials for their products;
- Working together to achieve scale and greater bargaining power in the market.
Twin is a pioneer and leader of the Fair Trade movement, seeking to positively redress unequal relations through fairer trade and to build better lives for the poorest and most marginalised in the trading chain.
Twin currently works with over 50 democratic farmer organisations in 18 countries representing some 400,000 smallholder farmers; helping them build capacity, develop infrastructure, overcome market barriers, adapt to the challenges of climate change and improve product quality – creating resilience and adding value to their business.
The trading arm of Twin, Twin Trading has helped to create market access for many of JMI’s members and continues to be a key supportive, long-term buyer partner.
